SUPPORT OUR CHILDREN

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Children of the Night has existed since its inception through the sole support of private contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Children of the Night has a broad base of support including churches, schools, record companies, radio stations, celebrities, and even Social Security recipients who donate $15 a month. No contribution is too large or too small. In recent years, Children of the Night has been the beneficiary of numerous wills, trusts, and bequests. Children of the Night maintains a mailing list of 16,000 donors and conducts a successful direct-mail program whereby solicitation letters are mailed six times a year.

Private funding means assisting children in need with less bureaucratic red tape. With your support and referrals, our children have an alternative to the streets and a chance for a normal life.

Children of the Night Donor Privacy Statement and Mailing List Privacy Policy

Children of the Night maintains the highest level of respect for the privacy of its donors and mailing list. In furtherance of our commitment to honor your rights, the Board of Directors has developed the Donor Privacy Policy to guide our volunteers and staff on how they may and may not use your personal information.

WHAT INFORMATION WE COLLECT

Children of the Night collects and uses various personal information from donors that includes: amount donated, address, telephone number, donor comments and e-mail address. Tax laws in the United States require Children of the Night to keep contact information and contribution level of donors on file.

HOW WE USE THAT INFORMATION

Children of the Night will never publish, sell, trade, rent or share names (unless released for publication), e-mail or mail addresses, or telephone numbers of our donors or mailing list. Children of the Night will use contact information (e-mail, telephone number and address) of donors for these purposes only:

  • Distribute receipts for donations
  • Thank donors for their donation
  • Inform donors about upcoming fundraising and other activities of Children of the Night
  • Internal analysis and record keeping
  • Reporting to relevant U.S. and State agencies (these reports are not for public inspection)
  • Contact donors about changes to this policy

However, properly anonymized donor information is used for promotional and fundraising activities. We allow donors the option to have their name publicly associated with their donation unless the donor explicitly chooses the "anonymous" field when donating online. In all other cases the default is for staff and volunteers to assume all donations are not to be publicly announced unless the donor explicitly indicates otherwise. Comments given in donor forms are published in public lists and may be used in promotional materials while comments sent to us via email, fax or telephone are kept strictly confidential.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

All access to donor financial information is strictly limited to professional staff who need to process those data. No such data are given to any person, organization or group who does not need to access those data.

Children of the Night only uses online payment processing services with the GiveDirect online donation form using industry standard security practices to ensure the safety of each transaction. SSL encryption, hardware security, building security, and software security measures have all been put into practice to protect the sensitive data we collect. Children of the Night does not store, nor does it have access to your credit card information, bank account numbers, or other account data sent to those processing services.

Based on our 2010 audited financial statements:

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

Join Our Team and Provide Help and Hope

The efforts of Dr. Lee and her staff to rescue children in jeopardy would not be possible without the dedication of more than 150 committed volunteers and the generous financial support of thousands of caring individuals who make this vital work possible. Please click the donate button to send your gift and help a child escape the horrors of living on the streets.

Children of the Night currently operates two volunteer programs. The first volunteer program offers volunteers the opportunity to get involved at the Children of the Night home in Van Nuys, California. Volunteers are invited to host activity workshops in our home for our children, assist our administration with clerical work, represent our organization at various public speaking events, or they may provide their professional services to our program free of charge. Please see below for a full list and description of volunteer positions available at the Children of the Night home.

The other volunteer program currently offered is through the Children of the Night With Out Walls (WOW) program. The WOW Volunteer Program allows volunteers across America the opportunity to get hands-on involvement and make an impact on the lives of children living in underfunded and undeveloped shelters in their area anywhere in the country. WOW is a cost effective means of providing resources to America's teens who are forced to live on the streets.

Volunteer Policies

Children of the Night rescues runaway teenagers who have become involved in prostitution. It is absolutely essential that all volunteers are aware of the sensitivity and confidentiality required to be a volunteer at the Children of the Night home. Therefore, it is important that all applicants thoroughly read and understand the policies before applying.

Please submit a copy of the followings documents with application:

  • Driver's License
  • Health Screening within last year
  • Proof of Auto Insurance
  • TB Test within last year

Upon receipt of your completed volunteer application, we will write to the 3 references you have provided. Once 3 references have been received, an appointment will be scheduled for you to visit the home and an interview will be conducted.

Before starting work as a volunteer at the Children of the Night home, we will carefully explain rules pertaining to work within the Children of the Night organization. It is essential that you abide by these rules. If you do not, your position as a volunteer at Children of the Night could be terminated. It is essential that each volunteer is aware of how the program works and what is considered inappropriate within the home.

Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Children of the Night. To help you make a selection for placement with Children of the Night, a brief description of opportunities has been listed.

Workshop Volunteers: Organize a 1.5-hour activity for our children on a hobby or special interest (i.e., crafts, makeup, improv comedy, acting, animation, first aid, dance, yoga, jewelry making, magic, origami, self-defense, HIV awareness, etc.). Volunteers are asked to provide all materials necessary for their activity. Workshops are scheduled one month in advance and take place on weeknights from 7pm to 8:30pm.

Clerical: Help assemble press kits and volunteer packets in the Children of the Night home. Hours available are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Tutor: Work one-on-one with students under the supervision of our school staff to help with math, writing, and other subjects. Tutors work with school staff at the Children of the Night home to assist students living in the facility as well as those who access our school on-line; basic command of computers and internet is necessary. Hours available are Monday through Thursday 10am to 4pm.

Professional: We need health, psychiatric and social service providers to work by appointment with our children from their own offices i.e. Doctors, Dentists, Psychologists, etc.

Service Professionals: We need volunteers who are printers, photographers, artists, and writers who are willing to provide their services free of charge.

Public Speaking: We need volunteers for various public speaking events around the community to assist in elevating awareness about child prostitution in America. Training provided. Hours vary.

Out of State Awareness: We are always in need of out of state volunteers to attend fundraisers and to help raise public awareness for Children of the Night. Every year from September through December we are invited to attend Federal Combined Campaigns to get federal employees to select our charity to donate through their payroll. These campaigns are held in various states. The work entails managing a booth (table and chairs provided), and distributing informational materials (also provided). These campaigns are usually held on weekdays during normal business hours. The dates are always cleared with volunteers to ensure their availability.

WOW Volunteer: Now through the Children of the Night With Out Walls (WOW) program, our expert Volunteer Coordinator can match you with an agency in your area where you can get hands-on volunteer experience and make a difference at a local-level. Volunteer opportunities vary by agency, but may include workshops, clerical, professional, service professional, and/or public speaking positions in your area.

WOW has recently partnered with the National Runaway Switchboard, and is looking for volunteers to implement their new program "Let's Talk Runaway Prevention Curriculum" (RPC). Implementation of RPC includes presentation of DVDs, leading group discussions, and worksheets (all materials provided). This volunteer position is ideal for middle and high school students in need of community-service hours or for students in search of service-learning projects.
